Why don't I ever hear of violent Christian extremism?

March 11th, 2010 by smith
  • How often are there terrorist attacks or just violent attacks by Christian groups? I never hear of any, and I think that's because the media tries to appease to 80% of their christian demographic.

Are there any infamous modern violent attacks from Christians?

  • Just look up the history of Northern Ireland....there was terrorism there perpetrated by Protestants & Catholics up until the 1990's

  • are you kidding me? most religious hostilities were done by Christians and Christianity.

and modern? lets see the KKK the christians killing Hindus in orissa, India

  • Hm, let's see...

    KKK
    IRA
    Timothy James McVeigh

Maybe you're just not paying attention.

  • Well there are lots of "Christian" extremists like the KKK.

But the question is, are they really Christians if they kill and attack people? Those are sins, Jesus wouldn't do that. So maybe, technically, there are no Christian attackers.

    Makes you think.

  • timothy mcveigh

killed over 150 in 1995 in oklahoma city

  • They are there. You just need to watch the news more often. I think it depends on what news stations you watch, and where you get the information. If you want to hear about these news stories make sure you check out the proper stations. Examples, CNN, MSNBC, TBN.

  • If you want to see some SO CALLED "Christian" extremism, do a google.com search on WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH, SHIRLEY PHELPS, FRED PHELPS. They do what they do in the NAME of Christianity, but no Christian would do what they do. They REALLY do what they do for MONEY. They push, and push, and push until someone responds and then they sue. Fred Phelps' congregation is about 80% family. He has about 5 lawyers. But they pushed the buttons on the wrong father of a fallen U.S. Marine and lost $10.9 million for their efforts.
Even non-Christians can see their folly.
Too often people do things in the NAME OF Christianity when what they do is not Christian at all. See some of the 'examples' listed above.

  • This country is mostly Christian, so you're just not gonna hear it that much. America is a pretty dangerous country and have so much problems, with a horrible education system...but what you'll hear is that we're the best country in the world. Nobody wanna admit that most immigrants that come here are from crappy countries and feel forced to leave. America's super power status mostly lies in the military.

  • Oh you haven't heard of The Jonestown Massacre huh?

There are a lot of Christian extremists, like the KKK.

  • The IRA and their British counterparts are notorious for bombings of children and nuns and stuff. We don't hear about it because the US gov is taking the side of the invading Brits, so we won't hear about how they don't belong in Ireland...

  • Christian extremists have a tendency to attack people not by storm, like other extremists, but by imposing their values on people. for instance, the ban of gay marriage in all but like 2 states. dont tell me that isnt harmfull to people, just like a grenade blast it can displace people, only emotionally. even though homosexuals can still be in a relationship, marriage is not just a title or a plaque on the wall, there is a lot of legal things involved such as hospital visits and/or health insurance issues.

  • Most violent Christian extremism happened during the Middle Ages, particularly the Spanish Inquisition, which demanded that Jews convert or be killed.

More recent but still historic are the Puritans burning witches, hanging Quakers and killing Catholics. Catholics and Protestants also killed each other regularly in Europe for a couple of centuries.

Nowadays in the US, you hear of occasional violence, such as Christians killing abortion doctors. More often, you get verbal violence, such as the Christians who disrupted the funeral of murder victim Matthew Shepard with their "God hates fags" signs, or even interChristian hatred, like fundamentalists telling Catholics their practices are Satanic. Similarly, the Southern Baptist Convention a few years ago merrily announced that they were going to run a campaign to convert all Jews. It's not physical violence, but it's still despicable behavior.

  • There are Christian terrorist militants that have attacked Northeast India. They're not really "infamous" because they don't get much media coverage.

  • the KKK, westboro baptist church, The IRA (Irish Catholic terrorists)
so this goes to show us that terrorist is not defined as muslim

  • the only reason there aren't more is because we're in a first world nation

but you're blind if you think there are none

I'm assuming you're just talking about modern times. If you go through history, then there's just too many to list.

  • The IRA invented a lot of what terrorism is.
