Why don't ER docs always do a drug screen on a trauma patient, and when they do, do the police find out?

  • I'm a trauma nurse, but by the time they come to me, they have already given them narcotics and prob benzos. It just needs to be done in ER, even if that means straight cathing, the ER doc should WANT to know.

  • In my experience as a phlebotomist if there were any questions by the police, docs, or parents they did a drug screen. If the police asked then yes they would find out. They probably don't do it every single time because many time trauma patients receive narcotics on the way TO the hospital. That can complicate things. It's sorta like preg tests at the hospital. If they are going to give you something or perform a test where they can hurt a pregnant woman they test. If they aren't it's none of their business to find out unless you wish to tell them. HIPPA

** It's like anything else, you work with what you have and go from there. Maybe they should find out but, that involves more tests, more money, more time before treatment, and more pressure on an already busy lab. If you feel that strongly work at changing the protocols at your hospital. Maybe you'll be a groundbreaker ;)

  • Well the doctors/nurses don't take it upon themselves to go to the police to say "hey this guy's on drugs." But I think there is a way for the police to find out if they really want to know.

  • I believe you would also have to give your permission for them to do that. Is that correct?
