Who's the most famous female painter?

  • Definately Mary Cassat

  • Probably Frida Kahlo is the most celebrated by now. Georgia O'Keefe and Louise Nevelson were very big names in the US when I was there in the 1970's. Going further back, Artemisia Gentileschi and Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun in the Baroque/rococo period, and Mary Cassat and Berthe Morisot in the Impressionist.

There are a lot more in recent times, as discrimination has become somewhat milder so that more women actually get a chance to pursue their art and have it recognized.

  • There are quite a few to choose from.

Frida Kahlo is very popular, and so is Georgia O'Keeffe

  • As an Art teacher I'd say Frida Kahlo.

  • The problem with that question is that there are so many great ones. Marie Cassat is essentially responsible for the Havermeyer collection at the Metropolitan museum of art. Louise Bourgeoise was a sculptor, not a painter, but one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. So were Georgia O'Keefe and Frieda Kahlo. Sonia Delauney was roundly despised (with her husband. Both are important though). Helen Frankenthaler and Agnes Martin were both great mid-century abstractionists. Judy Chicago did the feminist Dinner Party. I like to joke that Jennie Holzer dated one of my friends when she was in Art School.

While we don't know much about women artists in the classical world, there exists a greek pot with a painting of a potter's studio of the classical era, and on it we see a girl painting.

Sofinisba Anguissola and Artemisia Gentileschi were Rennaissance era painters.

Look, it's all unfair. I've just named a BUNCH of great artists who were women. And all these people talk about how there are so few great women artists. Then when you complain they never give you enough time to talk about what is so great about all of them. I've watched many of them have their moments int the sun. They all deserve it. And as that moment started to pass, (there is a feminist named Barbara whose last name I've forgotten) we start talking about how few good women artists there are. If you live outside the US the British/Portuguese artist Paula Rego is far more famous than she is inside the US. And she deserves to be better known. But so do Frieda Kahlo and Georgia O'Keefe -- and yes I am aware Kahlo recently had a movie made about her.

No woman is preeminent. And when I think about it, that's how it should be.
