Voters, how do you feel when one of your family members is for the other candidate?

March 10th, 2010 by admin
  • My friends know me as a McCain fan and I am proud to be a fan of McCain's.

However, one of my children is for Obama. I have asked if they have compared the plans and their response was they seen enough on TV.

Is the media really having that much effect on the younger generation? Is the younger generation only voting for Obama because of their rebellion and thinking if they vote for Obama they will have much more freedoms?

Does the new generation even really know what government is all about?

Don't get me wrong, I respect my children and still love them no matter what but it hurts to see them make the wrong decisions - How does this affect you?

  • I see what you are saying. Obama is like a new bad fad and kids will always be under peer pressure. Obama is simply the "cool" one to vote for. My great niece is only 13 and she is driving my sister nuts saying she should vote for Obama because he is "cool" or older kids she looks up to are voting for him. What is really sad is when you see a group of first time voters (by age) being asked on TV interviews or just by a street reporter why they are voting. They don't have intelligent answers. Sad and scary.

  • Hopefully the Obama supporter is not of voting age...

But seriously, I think the TV has a lot to do with the way the kids think today. They don't seem to feel that they should think things through or even form their own opinion.

Places such as "Rock the Vote" and "MoveOn.org" foster this non-thinking mentality. Neither site recognizes the other side as worthy of an opinion. I had a young man from MoveOn.org tell me that my opinion was only worthy of the trash when I told him that I was not an Obama supporter.

The TV told the younger generation that they are supposed to hate Bush and vote against republicans.

The person who quoted that there are 2 sides of every story, didn't know today's youth!

  • Give the younger generation some credit. Perhaps they are thinking Obama is the right choice, and it has nothing to do with 'rebellion' per se.

I have friends that support McCain, but it doesn't affect the friendships, even though two of them have sort of hinted at how much our individual vote "doesn't count."......Haha......

Don't view it as a "wrong decision". Some of our greatest thinkers stuck up for their own beliefs rather than letting others influence their judgment.

  • My dad and his current wife are Obama fans-
    I am not.
They came over for lunch last Sunday, it was interesting.
We just don't talk politics- i don't agree with his
Come to think of it there is a lot my Dad and I don't agree on besides politics.

  • My Parents are 79 and they have voted Obama after being raised in a white world. I'd say there is still hope for you.

  • When it comes to younger voters, they will often go against what their elders are for. If discussion occurs about the campign, just as a tactic, i would lean their way and see what happens. I respect the choice of others and that is truly what democracy is about. I am grateful we do have a choice.

  • The younger generation hasn't a clue what true oppression is. I'm 40, and President Reagan did a good job instructing us what it's like to live in totalitarian societies.

Now, we're the oppressors, even though Sadaam Hussein fed those who disagreed with him into plastic shredders feet first.

As for your first question, I've simply agreed to disagree with my dad and sister in-law, who are both virulently Democrat. Dare I say Leftist.

Can't let politics get in between those and who you love - or are forced to hang around with!

  • Personally I believe it's because Obama and his camp know how to utilize things like the internet and other technology that is at every young persons hands... now I am still a young person as I am seeing young people as around the college age crowd.... so he knows how to get on that level... I mean even with this election we have been seeing the insurgence of mainstream media outlets such as myspace, twitter, Youtube, and even testing being used... it's really amazing.... Personally I feel that most are attracted to him because he can get down on our level using the technology that is now available...

Most of my family agree with each other... but there is always one... and with them we either debate respectfully or we just don't talk about.... more often than not though it's the latter...

  • Its doesn't matter to me because my family we able to have civil convo without all the name calling of the candidates.

  • Obama wants to RAISE TAXES in this horrible economic time--the last time a President raised taxes during a bad economic time (Herbert Hoover) we went into a great depression. Obama is going to REPEAT History...

For the people who say Obama is only gonna tax the rich people..well, THE RICH PEOPLE own the major companies...and if they get taxed...you think the millions of POOR PEOPLE who work for the rich people aren't gonna be affected? You're lying to yourself.

The fact remains that Barack Obama is 47 years old and doesn't have a single friend, associate or religious mentor who isn't the sort of creep that most of us would cross the street to avoid.

Obama, we're told, will bring us all together, but during four years in the U.S. Senate, he has never voted for a bipartisan piece of legislation. His memoirs are jam-packed with illegal drug use, racist rants and sophomoric Marxism. He claims to be post-racial, whatever that means, but the church he attended for 20 years gave its highest honor to Louis Farrakhan just last December. I suppose that also escaped Obama's notice.

  • You child has more sense than you do!

  • not all people from the new generation is voting for McCain.
I'm 19 and I support McCain. My boyfriend who is 21 also supports McCain. Also, we have a couple of friends that support McCain as well.

I just think that most of the new generation is more persuaded by someone who is charismatic then by someone who isn't.

  • Oh, we all face this. My grandparents always agreed not to vote because one was a Democrat and the other a Republican. They figured they would just cancel out each other. I would remind my children that their taxes WILL go up with Obama. It's not possible to pay for all of his socialist programs for the bums that don't like to work and the illegals with only 3% of the highest earners paying the whole tab. In fact, many of them will just quit working or cut back in order not to hand over most of their pay. That is what I would do, too.

  • There is no such as a wrong decision in a presidential election
Its whatever you think is best
    it does not affect me

  • Only the future will tell which are the right or wrong decisions. Until then we can only make our best decision based on the facts we have.

Your child that is for Obama and compared their plans based on TV should be asked where they got their information. Some networks obviously are more "even" than others. I wouldn't be concerned if they used multiple sources or both extremes (to me that is FoxNews and MSNBC) and made a choice. You have to trust that you have taught them enough to make an educated judgment.

I have discussed the election with many members of my family. We discuss issues and not necessarily which candidate we may be voting for or against. It tends to keep the conversation more civil.

  • I, too, plan to vote for McCain this election (more for Palin than for him, though.) Anyway, my younger cousin and his mom (my aunt) are apparently Obama supporters. This would be of no concern to me, except they ambushed me the other day and totally got on my case. They asked me who I was going to vote for and when I said McCain, they flipped! My cousin started going on about those Sarah Palin SNL skits and how she's so stupid and ditzy. I'm like, "You do realize that's not really her, right?" I love him and all, but he has trouble seperating what he sees on the TV from real life. I personally don't care if he and his mom are Obama supporters, I just wish they'd respect my choice and leave me alone about it.
