Vortec superchargers on stock engines?

March 15th, 2010 by jane
  • I was looking at Vortec superchargers and noticed a lot of their systems develop boost levels in the 9-10psi range. How can a stock engine that already has moderately high compression handle that kind of boost without changing the heads + pistons? I don't get it.

  • There is a lot of development goes into supercharges, and if they were going to damage a motor, the company, particularly a large one like Vortec wouldn't supply them.

You may find that, depending on the motor, there may be a spacer plate included, to reduce the compression, however, most cars are capable of running a lot more compression than they do from factory.

One motor I built had around 8:1 compression as standard and with the pistons I fitted, the compression was raised to around 12.5:1
