What can you tell me about Christchurch?

July 4th, 2009 by wktd
  • I currently live in Auckland. I like going out to town, partying, clubbing, etc.
I know that Chrischurch might be more quiet but I got an splendid job offer that suits me so well and I'm really considering to move there.
What can you tell me about it? e.g. how about summer? are there any beaches to swim or is it not hot enough for that? or no beaches around? is winter to dawn cold? what about the people? I've heard they are not very nice to immigrants or else they just ignore them, is that true?, not so many people over there? many places to see around? expensive?
Any of the above or anything else that you could tell me about, thanks!

  • Christchurch has a casino.
It is a lovely city. I live in Wellington, but have been to Christchurch a few times. It has also got extensive, reliable bus services. And a super-duper city exchange. (www.metroinfo.org.nz) It's got great stuff to do as well.

There is a beach or few. I highly recommend going to www.maps.google.co.nz . It will show you the beaches, the parks, railway stations, rivers etc. Also, www.aatravel.co.nz will yield most things you want to know. TripAdvisor.com is also a good site.

  • Hi im in chch right now been here my whole life summers good normally round 20C.
There are around 1-3 beaches the sand isn't very nice though its nice in summer.
Winter can be crazy like one day its cold next hot but its not normally really cold!
People are nice to immigrants well... it kinda depends where they r from lol ur from auckland so ur fine!
Its a good size city like not to big but big enough.
There are a few places eg beaches, art centre, art gallery, cathedral, Sumner etc etc...

Some parts of christchurch are more expensive then others but that wont take u long to learn christchurch is reasonable with the prices of things!

    Have fun!
    Good Luck
    Bye

  • Christchurch. A great place. I lived there for 6 years for university, then a little after.

Remember that everyone in New Zealand came from somewhere else. They are all immigrants.

There is a class in Christchurch that are descended from the people who came out on the first four ships, as immortalised in "The Square". But the friends I had among those people were all good people, if a little proud of heritage.

I suspect that Christchurch is a little more conservative, a little more English heritage & a little different, but basically, it is another NZ city.

Summer: North-westers. CHCH is on the end of a long, LONG plain. The wind comes from the alps, crosses the plains & gets really warm & constant. You get these really warm winds, mostly without gusts, through summer. Great weather to be out.

Clear skies, yes, so that means cool mornings, with ice on the roads some mornings, a touch of snow about once every 5 years, but clear skies also mean warm afternoons.

Flat: If you are fit, bicycles are great. Cycle everywhere.

The university is good. The centre is rather arty.

    Close to skiing.

Swimming, yes people swim there. It is not a harbour city, so don;t expect a beach through the city centre: instead a river. Brighton has a long beach. Also Sumner has some beaches & coast.

I'm not an authority on nightlife & have not lived there for a while, so I cannot compare, sorry. Maybe where there is a university & society, there will be a range of nightlife.

Christchurch has many place round to visit. Hanmer Springs, hot springs while snow lies on the ground.
Kaikoura for seafood & weekend culture.
    surrounded by picturesque farmland.
Akaroa fo a (once) French settlement.
Lyttleton & governer's bay for historic harbour.

Plenty of suburbs to choose the style of place you want. Several sizable suburban malls.
